(KTNC)--Water and sewer rates are going up in Mound City. The Mound City Board of Aldermen approved rate increases after public hearings this month.
An analysis indicated that current rates are not sufficient to support the costs of operation, debt, and repair and replacement reserves for either the sewer or water systems.
Aldermen approved a motion to increase the sewer base rate to $5.75 per month, plus $4.72 per thousand gallons. The current rates are a base charge of $5.40, with a unit cost of $3.84 per thousand gallons.
Water rates will be increased to a base rate of $6.00, plus $7.31 per thousand gallons for in-town users. Out-of-town water customers will see rates of $9.24 and $9.14 per thousand gallons, and a 15-percent increase to the PWSD for all tiers.
Aldermen also increased the water deposit rates. On the recommendation of Water Superintendent Randy Crowley, a motion was approved to increase the renters' deposit to $150 and the homeowners' deposit to $75.
The city will evaluate a homeowner's pay history after five years and if bills are current and have been paid consistently, the deposit will be applied as a credit to the water bill.
No comments were received during the hearings.
The changes will take effect on January 1.
