(KAIR)--Potential personnel cutbacks at Fort Leavenworth could impact the Atchison economy.
That word from Fort Leavenworth officials as they came before the Atchison City Commission during a recent meeting to inform them of the potential cuts, and how they could possibly effect the long term economic health of the city.
Fort Leavenworth Public Affairs Officer Jeff Wingo explains that the army is preparing for the potential cuts by conducting an environmental assessment, and their impact could be very far reaching. He says there is a socioeconomic impact on each community surrounding Fort Leavenworth including Atchison, Jefferson, Wyandotte, and Johnson Counties.
Wingo says the estimated cuts are high with a potential 1,750 soldiers and 750 civilian employees.
Wingo adds that while nothing is locked in stone yet, the public does have the opportunity to make public comments regarding the cuts up until the 25th of August.
The Atchison City Commission agreed to submit public comments regarding the matter to the United States Army Environmental Command before the deadline.
If you would like to submit a comment on these potential cuts, you can send an e mail to usarmy.jbsa.aec.nepa@mail.mil.
