(KNZA)--A former service station in the Jackson County community of Whiting has been listed in the Register of Historic Kansas Places.
The Kansas Historic Sites Board of Review during their quarterly meeting on Saturday voted to list the Whiting Service Station located at 204 Whiting Street in the state Historical Register.
The station was built in 1928. Local mechanic Fred Thonen operated the Whiting Way Garage, a precursor to his Whiting Service Station, which opened May 5th, 1928. The station served the motoring public until it closed in 1966.
It exhibits the Craftsman style and features a canopy that extends over the driveway. The station was nominated for its local commercial and architectural significance.
The Register of Historic Kansas Places is the state’s official list of historically significant properties.
