(KNZA)--Just because your caller ID shows a known phone number doesn't mean you should necessarily believe it.
That word from Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat, as scammers apparently turn to technology to enhance their rip-off efforts.
Riat says a local resident recently received two phone calls that, according to the caller ID, came from St. Mary's State Bank. Suspicious of the prerecorded message, the person didn't fall for the scheme. However, a similar scam, utilizing the phone number and name of another local bank, did result in the loss of over $1,000 for the victim.
Riat says the scammers appear to be using cell phone applications that, when downloaded, will allow a phone number to be “spoofed,” meaning the name and number of a known business will falsely show up on the caller ID of the person called.
Riat says any phone call, regardless of the accompanying caller ID information, should be fully verified prior to conducting any financial-based business.
