(KMZA)--Plans are proceeding for the proposed construction of a new Nemaha County Jail, with a public meeting held Monday evening on the project.
Only two members of the public attended the informational meeting held at the Pioneer Building in Seneca.
On hand was Jeff Lane with Treanor Architects, representatives of AHRS Construction, Nemaha County Commissioners, Sheriff Rich Vernon and other sheriff’s department personnel.
Lane presented a floor plan, site plan and outdoor renderings for the proposed 34-bed jail addition covering 15,000-square-feet. The jail addition would be attached to the west side of the current Nemaha County Law Enforcement Center, filling the current parking lot.
The county plans to finance the project the estimated $3.6 to $4.3 million project through existing capital outlay funds.
The County Commission in March voted to enter into a contract with AHRS Construction to serve as Construction Manager at Risk for the project.
Bids are to be obtained this month for the project and the Construction Manager at Risk will then come to the Commission with a guaranteed maximum price for the project. The Commission would then decide whether to proceed or not.
Once construction begins, Lane says the project is estimated to take eleven months to complete.
The current 15-bed jail was built in 1978. Vernon says the lack of room, security and safety issues, antiquated plumbing and an outdated design combine to make the current jail inadequate for use.
