Approval Granted to Seek Bids for New Corning Fire Station
(KNZA)-- Plans for the construction of a new fire station in the Nemaha County community of Corning are proceeding.
The Nemaha County Commission on Monday gave grant administrator Virginia Deinstbier approval to advertise for bids for the materials needed for the project.
Tom Arpin with the Manhattan-based engineering firm BG Consultants reviewed the plans for the building with commissioners.
Nemaha County Fire District #2 was awarded an about $300,000 KAN STEP grant in April through the Kansas Department of Commerce for the project.
The total estimated project cost is nearly $597,000. The grant funds will go to purchase the materials, with volunteers providing the “ sweat equity” for the construction of the new fire station.
In other business, Jim Buser, who is part of a committee that is searching for a venue to hold the Kansas Fur Harvesters Association’s annual conference in October 2016, met with the Commission to discuss the possibility of holding the 4-day event in Seneca.
Buser said they would need use of the Community Building and another building near there, possibly the fair building or the recycling building.
Commissioners told Buser to let the Association know they would be in favor of the conference being held in Seneca, and would do what they could to accommodate the event.
