(KTNC)-- Sale of consumer fireworks begins this week in Nebraska. The period when fireworks can be sold begins at 12:01 Wednesday morning and ends at midnight on July 4.
There are 703 retail stands licensed to sell fireworks in Nebraska. Only fireworks purchased from licensed retailers can be purchased legally in the state. A 2010 state law expanded the types of fireworks allowed, but there are some restrictions still in place.
Prohibited items include rockets with a stick attached, nighttime parachutes, wire sparklers, fireworks that are shot into the air and ignite automatically after coming to the ground due to sufficient temperature, and firecrackers that contain more than 50 milligrams of explosive composition.
The State Fire Marshal’s office says the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go to a public show put on by trained experts.
They offer several safety tips to keep in mind if you choose to shoot off your own fireworks:
-Make sure the fireworks you plan to use are legal in your area.
-Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.
-Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby, and know how to operate the fire extinguisher.
-Do not wear loose-fitting clothing while using fireworks.
-Stand several feet away from lit fireworks.
-If a device does not go off, do not stand over it to investigate it, but put it out with water and dispose of it.
-Read the directions and warning labels. If the device is not marked with the contents, directions, and warning label, do not light it.
-Supervise children around fireworks at all times.
