(KAIR)--The Atchison County Commission has taken another step toward completing the necessary requirements for another Kansas Department of Transportation high risk road safety grant.
The commissioners voted 3-0 during a recent meeting to hire Topeka based engineering firm Cook, Flatt, and Stroble to conduct the needed preliminary work on the planned project. Which, Commission Chair Jeff Schuele, says is a necessary part of the grant application process.
Schuele adds the project will be concentrated on 286th Road from U.S. Highway 73 all the way to Edwards Road. Some of the planned upgrades include striping of the road and widening of the curve on 286th and Edwards Road.
This grant is similar to the KDOT road safety grant the county was awarded last year. KDOT will pick up ninety percent of the cost to make the improvements, and the county is responsible for the remaining ten percent.
Schuele says that if the grant is awarded, the project could be completed sometime next year.
