(KNZA)--What began as a domestic disturbance in Whiting turns into a high speed pursuit Tuesday morning, ending around 20 minutes later in a crash, and the the arrest of a Topeka man.
Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says the incident began around 9:00. “We had disturbance call at 505 Whiting Street in the City of Whiting. Apparently the suspect indicates he had some type of domestic relationship with the victim. The suspect allegedly sliced the tires of the victim's vehicle and left the scene.”
It was just a short time later that the suspect pick-up truck was spotted. “A Jackson County Sheriff's Deputy located the S10 pick-up truck southbound on U.S. Highway 75 near 266th Road, about three miles north of Holton,” Morse tells MSC News. “The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, the vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit then ensued. The pursuit then continued southbound, at high rates of speed, went through the City of Holton, then went south of Holton on U.S. 75.”
As the pursuit continued, Holton and Potawatomi Tribal Police, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Department, Topeka Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol, complete with their helicopter in the air, all provided assistance. “The vehicle continued south, exited U.S. 75 at 24 Highway, “ Morse says. “The Kansas Highway Patrol then intervened and was able to disable the vehicle through a vehicle maneuver. The [suspect] vehicle then left the roadway and struck a guardrail.”
The truck was apparently driving on flattened tires, deflated with stop sticks, when the Patrol forced it to stop.
The suspect, who was not injured, is identified by Morse as 41-year old Joseph L. Swazey III.
He was taken into custody on a Jackson County warrant for ten counts of stalking, along with charges including felony flee and elude and others that remain pending.
Swazey was booked into the Jackson County Jail following his arrest.
