Holton USD 336 Special Election Tuesday
(KNZA)--Voters in Holton USD 336 will go to the polls Tuesday to decide the fate of a $21.5 million bond issue for the construction of a new elementary school.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be three polling locations. Voters in Holton Ward 1, 2, and 3 will cast their ballots at the Jackson County Fair building. Voters in Jefferson, Liberty, Straight Creek, Grant, Banner, Franklin and Lincoln townships will cast their ballots in the 1st floor lobby of the Jackson County Courthouse. Casting their ballots at the Denison Community building will be voters in the city of Denison, Garfield Township, Cedar Township and Jefferson County.
If voters say “ yes”, the district plans to purchase property to the west of the current Colorado Elementary School, demolish the original 1954 building and construct a new two-story structure in its place. The 1986 building addition would be renovated for administrative support offices, which the district current rents.
The new 78,200-square-foot school will replace both of Holton’s existing elementary schools.
If approved by voters, the state will reimburse the district for 55 percent of the construction costs, or $11.8 million. District taxpayers would be responsible for about $9.6 million of the total amount, which would be financed over a 25-year period.
