(KTNC) - The Pawnee City Council still has made no decision whether to spray for mosquitoes this summer.
The council did vote two weeks ago on a motion to have HJP Pest Control spray the town six times this summer. The vote on that motion was two in favor, one against, and one abstaining. By rule, that abstention should have counted as a no vote, requiring Mayor Duane Westing to cast the deciding vote.
After discussing the matter again this week, the council decided to ask Paul Heath of HJP Pest Control to come to the next meeting to answer a few questions council members have about the spraying.
Questions include what chemical is used and whether it’s necessary to spray six times. In addition to spraying for mosquitoes, Pawnee City also places what are called “mosquito briquettes” in standing water around town.
City officials say residents should also help control the mosquito population by removing standing water from their property.
In action Monday night, the Pawnee City Council approved the second reading of an ordinance changing the fees to license dogs in town.
The council decided to re-install speed bumps around North Park.
And Tina Moore, with the Pawnee City Ball Association, requested the city provide the organization with the same donation as last year. The city paid for the electricity at the ball fields and gave the Ball Association $600. The council took no action on the request Monday.
