(KAIR)--The Atchison Hospital Emergency Department has introduced a new service for patients who require minor medical care, but do not want to pay the high fees normally associated with an emergency room visit.
Chief Nursing Officer for Atchison Hospital Sandy Leggett says the idea for the service came up about a year ago when the hospital conducted a community survey, which showed that community members wanted an urgent care service at the hospital.
Emergency Department Nurse Manager Anna Fowler adds that the service will be run from the existing emergency room, using the same staff and equipment, but catering to less serious illnesses and injuries. It allows staff to treat, and continue to treat patients with a minor medical problem, without the cost of a full emergency department visit.
Fowler says the service would be ideal for those situations when visiting your primary doctor is not an option. For example, if you have a child suffering from a sore throat at 5:00 on a Friday evening, there is no need to wait the entire weekend to see a doctor.
The minor medical service at the Atchison Hospital opened Monday, and is open from 9:00AM-9:00PM Saturday and Sunday, and 5:00PM-9:00PM Monday through Friday.
