(KNZA)--The Holton USD 336 Board of Education during a special meeting Monday evening finalized a $21.5 million bond resolution for the construction of a new elementary school.
According to information posted by Superintendent Nancy Meyer on the district’s web site, the board selected Option 2B to place on the ballot.
The option calls for the purchase of property to the west of the current Colorado Elementary School, demolition of the original 1954 building and construction of a new two-story structure in its place. The 1986 building addition would be renovated for administrative support offices, which the district currently rents.
Meyer says the new building will allow for five classrooms per grade level. The board decided to add three additional classrooms, making 5 sections for all grade levels.
Voters will decide the fate of the bond issue during a May 6th special election.
If approved by voters, the state would pay 52 percent of the bond issue. District patrons would be responsible for 48 percent of the cost, which is to be financed over a 25 year period with a 8.136 property tax levy.
The bond resolution has been submitted to the Kansas State Department of Education for their approval. The State Board of Education is expected to consider the matter at their March 11th meeting.
