(KMZA)--The final step has been taken, clearing the way for a grant application to help fund the construction of a new fire station in Corning.
Virginia Dienstbier, whose preparing the grant application for Nemaha County Fire District #2, informed the County Commission this week that an environmental review done on the property where the new fire station is to be built showed no significant effect on the environment. No public comment was given regarding the review on file in the Nemaha County Clerk’s office. The environmental review was necessary to apply for the grant.
A $300,000 KAN-STEP grant will be sought through the Kansas Department of Commerce. The fire district will provide a 40 percent match, about $180,000, in the form of volunteer labor.
The grant application is due March 1st, and the fire district should hear back from the state on whether they are awarded the grant in 30 days.
In other business, the commission accepted the written resignation of Fire District #2 board member Anthony Heideman. On the recommendation of the remaining members of the fire board, the commission voted to appoint Leo Niehues to the board.
And the commission accepted the written resignation of Center Township trustee John Haug. On the recommendation of the remaining township board members, the commission voted to appoint Brian Steinlage to the position.
