(KAIR)--The Atchison Heritage Conference Center remodeling has slowed after officials discovered some unexpected needs.
Officials representing the project came before the Atchison City Commission Monday afternoon to request an increase in expenditures to accommodate these needs. City Manager Trey Cocking says several unforeseen issues need to be addressed. He says that once the ceilings, walls, and other structures were removed, conditions appeared to be different than what was expected during the design phase.
Cocking says that once the site is fully prepared, there are numerous steps that need to take place in order to make progress on the Conference Center. Once the entire building has been exposed, there are a series of changes that need to be made. The building can be brought up to code to keep the system intact, to run the new system the way the city wants to. There are also some visual changes planned to make the project look better.
Commissioners voted 3-1 to authorize the increase in expenditures and up to $60,000 in contingencies. Commissioner Larry Purcell cast the lone no vote.
