Broken Armed Escapee Sentenced
02/04/2014

(KNZA)--A Goff man who escaped from custody and then lead authorities on a high speed chase behind the wheels of a stolen Hiawatha vehicle last May has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

30-year-old Jonathan Watkins was sentenced in Brown County District Court on three felony counts—aggravated escape from custody, felony theft and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.  He was given credit for 266 days already served in jail and ordered to pay $900 restitution to the owner of the vehicle that was stolen.

Watkins pleaded no contest to the charges last December.  In exchange for the plea, an additional felony charge was dismissed.

On May 10th of last year, Watkins was being transported to the Brown County Jail on a Missouri warrant when authorities say he decided to run and steal the vehicle.
Suffering from a broken arm at the time of his transport, the officer didn’t have the necessary equipment to properly restrain him due to the injury.  The equipment has since been purchased.

Watkins apparently suffered the broken arm during an incident last April in northwestern Jackson County where he allegedly attacked two male relatives with a shovel and skillet.
