(KNZA)--A Best of Show win for Highland Community College.
The college earned that honor during the Kansas Grape Growers and Winemakers Association Annual Conference.
Once results were tabulated for the Taste of Kansas, the annual judging of state made wines, Highland's Chambourcin Reserve, a dry red wine, earned that distinction.
That wasn't the only win for Highland during the conference, with the college's Traiminette winning Best of Class of the semi-sweet white wines.
Being the initial vintage for the college, it was the first time Highland's wines have been submitted for judging.
Both types of grapes are grown at Highland Community College's vineyard, located northeast of its Wamego Center. It was planted four years ago as part of the development of programs focused on grape growing. The grapes were havested and the wine was made and bottled in the classroom.
A second vineyard has also been planted adjacent to the Wamego facility. It includes over 45 varieties of grapes and will be used for research purposes.
