(KNZA)--Plans to construct a Wal-Mart Supercenter in the Jackson County community of Holton are proceeding.
The step forward follows City Planning Commission approval of a preliminary plat for the proposed project.
Approval came after the commission determined that it fell within compliance of the city's zoning regulations.
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Delia Garcia says the Supercenter, complete with gas station, is planned to be constructed on two lots located at Arizona Avenue, replacing Holton's current Wal-Mart store. “The existing store in Holton has been there since 1981,” Garcia said. “We have an opportunity now to improve our services to customers in Holton by adding a full line of groceries and, of course, an expansion of the store since we're going from about 38, 000 square feet to about 70,000 square feet or so.”
According to Garcia, the project engineers plan to have the final plat ready in time for the Planning Commission's February 24th meeting. City Commission approval will have to be gained if the Planning Commission gives their ok, and that could happen in early April.
Garcia says approval will pave the way for Wal-Mart to move forward, including groundbreaking at the new location.
A specific timeline for the Supercenter opening has not yet been finalized by Wal-Mart.
