(KMZA)--Nearly two years in federal prison.
That's the sentence for a former Marshall County insurance agent who stole customer's premiums.
According to the office of U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, 49-year-old Monica Smart, of Frankfort, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud. She admitted that the crime occcurred from January 2009 until August 27th, 2010 while working for United Insurance, a small company located in Marysville.
Smart changed the mailing addressess of customers to keep them from receiving policy statements and notices. She also changed premium payment schedules from annual and semi-annual to monthly in order to pay only the monthly rate for the customers while collecting the difference from the larger payments for herself.
Prosecutors say she used the funds to pay her personal expenses.
Although customers were reimbursed, the owners of the company were left burdened with that cost.
Smart was sentenced Monday to 21-months behind bars, and ordered to pay $160,000 in restitution.
