(KAIR)--A heavy rainfall last fall caused a large amount of algae to break loose and build up in the City of Atchison's waste water treatment plant, causing some damage to the plant's UV system.
City Manager Trey Cocking says that damaged several light bulbs. During their meeting Monday evening, the City Commission authorized the repair of that system. Once repairs are made, a long term solution to the problem will be sought.
According to Cocking, options are available for the long term solution such as coverings to block the sunlight that promotes the algae growth and a grinder pump to break up the algae as it heads toward the UV station.
Algae levels at the plant are currently low, since the winter weather slows down the growth, but Cocking says the city wants a permanent solution in place before temperatures start to rise.
