(KNZA)-- The 2013 Winter Weather Season struck with force overnight leading to numerous reports of slide-offs and accidents according to state officials in Kansas.
As the snow accumulated overnight, roadway conditions continued to deteriorate. Kim Qualls, Public Affairs Manager for the Kansas Department of Transportation reports that as of 6:00 o’clock this morning, all northeast Kansas roadways were still completely snow-packed. However, with the cancellation of the winter storm warning that had been put in place by the National Weather Service, they are starting to see minor improvements on area roadways.
The next step for road crews, now that more snow accumulation has subsided, is to start treating the roadways. Once the melting or breakup of the snow packed roads has occurred, crews will be able to plow the roadways.
Qualls also notes that with continued wind, drifting is still a potential risk, so caution should be taken while traveling.
With the adverse weather conditions, numerous postponements and cancellations have been made.
