(KAIR)--School districts in the state could possibly see some additional funding. Recently, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback announced that he will be proposing a five year, $80 million plan to state lawmakers that would allow schools to fund a full day kindergarten program. USD 409 Superintendent Susan Myers says that there is a full day program already in place for her district, and that many schools in the state already knew the importance of all day kindergarten and funded those programs on their own.
Myers says that even though the district already funds a full program, funds from the state would certainly be welcomed. Any funds received from this new proposal would be applied toward the kindergarten program and money that had been used for that program would be shifted over to pay other bills and to enhance other grades.
Myers also stresses the importance of children attending kindergarten for an entire day. She says it is important for children to start their education early, and have a full day in which to learn as much as they can is very beneficial.
The state currently only funds half day programs. All but 15 of the state's 286 school districts fund an all day kindergarten on their own.
