(KNZA)--More than $3 million in facility improvements are being recommended at the Hiawatha Elementary School.
Representatives of the P1 Group presented the final master plan for improvements at the elementary school to the Hiawatha Board of Education Monday evening. The firm was hired by the board in August to assess the facility and develop recommendations for needed improvements.
Among the recommendations were replacement of the existing plumbing, which runs through underground tunnels, at an estimated cost of $840,000 to $897,000, and replacement of the existing heating and cooling system throughout the building at an estimated cost of nearly $1.7 to $1.9 million. The board was told the projects could be done in several phases.
Other recommendations included lighting system, fire and safety, and security upgrades.
P1 representatives estimated the plumbing, HVAC and lighting system upgrades would save the district more than $60,000 annually in energy and operational costs.
Board members agreed the improvements are needed, but how to pay for them was the question. Superintendent Penny Hargrove said the capital outlay fund couldn’t support all the projects at once, even if they were phased over several years. Board members agreed the only way the district could cover the cost was a bond issue. No action was taken by the board.
