(KAIR)--Thanksgiving is only a little more than a week away, but the city of Atchison is making plans to bring in the holiday season with a bang. The Atchison Chamber of Commerce is presenting the annual tree lighting event Thursday evening at the 500 block of the Atchison mall, and it promises to be an event worth remembering. While the event kicks off at 5:15 that evening, Chamber President Jacque Pregon says that Santa Clause will be arriving around 6:15 on an antique fire truck to help flip the switch on the Christmas tree.
While there will be fun for everyone, Pregon says that the event also serves another, very important service as well, that of helping gather food. Anyone that brings ten non perishable food items will be entered into a drawing to win a basket containing items from various downtown businesses. If you want to bring twenty items, your name will be entered into the drawing twice.
The festivities kick off at 5:15 with free hot chocolate and popcorn available to participants. Then, at 5:30 the 5th graders from St. Benedict's Catholic school will be singing holiday songs, followed by the children from the Atchison Child Care Center at 5:45. Atchison Mayor Dave Butler will make a speech at 6:00, followed by the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. The event is free and open to everyone.
