(KAIR)--For many people having a drink or two with their holiday dinner while they celebrate with family and friends is customary. It is always encouraged that if you do have those drinks, you should not get behind the wheel of a vehicle, no matter what time of the year it is, but starting on Monday and running through December 1st, local, county, and state law enforcement officials will be conducting the Special Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, making sure that those who are impaired, are not endangering others.
Kansas Highway Patrol Public Resource Officer Trooper Don Hughes, who further says that there are some tell tale signs of driving impaired that you can be on the lookout for such as failure to maintain a lane, failing to dim the brights on their vehicle, and going either too fast or too slow. He says that the best advice he can give is to simply give the keys to someone else if you have been drinking, so you can be sure that your holiday weekend is not disturbed.
The STEP program allows officers to work overtime hours to ensure that those who have had too much to drink are taken off the road and motorists can arrive at their destination safely. The money to fund the program comes from a grant provided by the Kansas Department of Transportation.
