(KAIR)--The city of Atchison is taking action to adjust chlorine levels in the city water system due to low chlorine levels in the rural water district number five area. To increase the chlorine level, they are temporarily switching to a free chlorine system from the normal combined chlorine residual system.
Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking who says that that while this increase in chlorine will help get levels where they need to be, there will be some side effects to the change. He states that while switching to the free chlorine system ensures that water district number five receives the proper chlorine levels, some people will be able to taste the chlorine in the water, and there will be a slight chlorine smell to the water. However, Cocking does say that the smell is not nearly as strong as one would find in swimming pool water.
Atchison Utilities Director Mike Mathews assures customers that the water is completely safe to drink. The change in taste and smell is only temporary, and has no health implications.
The change is chlorination was made Wednesday afternoon, and is expected to last no longer than two weeks.
