(KAIR)--There were a few Atchison residents who were surprised to hear some some loud noises accompanied by sparks flying in the air near the old Amelia Earhart bridge last night, since the structure was not scheduled to be full demolished until the 23rd of this month.
According to Kimberly Qualls with the Kansas Department of Transportation, what was seen was simply the result of preparation work. Workers have been working for the last few weeks to prepare the bridge for demolition and with the date quickly approaching, more crew has been brought in to speed up the process. The lower portion of the deck was being removed and until recently, that deck removal had been taking place over land. However, the portion over water is now being removed, so crews had to bring in a barge to catch the falling pieces, and prevent them from going into the river.
Qualls says the bridge implosion is still set to start on Monday September 23rd, with a start time of approximately 9:00AM
