Governor Brownback Proclaims Sept. as Food Safety Month

To highlight the importance of food safety for all Kansans, Governor Sam Brownback has proclaimed September as Kansas Food Safety Education Month.

Gov. Brownback joined with representatives of the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas State Department of Education, Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Restaurant and Hospitality Association, K-State Research and Extension and local health departments at a ceremony to sign the proclamation. Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Dale Rodman noted the importance of a protecting consumers and providing safe and healthy food options in all settings.

“From farm to fork, food safety is a top priority,” said Secretary Rodman. “At every step along the chain from the farm to processing to retail and to your dinner plate, it is imperative that each of us take proper steps to ensure our food is safe. There are steps each of us can take to reduce the risk of foodborne illness, and recognizing food safety education month will help promote those steps.”

The Kansas Department of Agriculture provides safe food handling courses for consumers, food workers and the food industry. Secretary Rodman said all individuals who handle food should work to ensure that the food that is prepared and served is done so in a safe manner to minimize any risk of foodborne illness.
