( KNZA )--A Hiawatha law firm has been hired to help provide court-appointed services in Brown County.
The Brown County Commission Friday voted to hire the firm of Finley, Miller, Cashman, Boye and Schmitt to take over the Kansas Legal Services contract effective October 1st.
The commission was told the attorney for Kansas Legal Services will be leaving and won’t be able to fulfill the 2013 contract with the county. County Attorney Kevin Hill, who was present for the discussion, suggested transferring the contract to a local firm.
The county also has contracts with attorney’s Andy Delaney, of Hiawatha, and Judd Herbster, of Sabetha, to provide court-appointed services in Brown County.
The attorney’s represent indigent defendants and handle child in need of care cases. They are paid a flat monthly fee by the county to handle the cases. Previously, court-appointed attorney’s were paid on a case-by case basis for a fee established by the court.
