Mascot Change Opposed In Nemaha Central District
(KMZA)--Impassioned statements in oppositon to the possibility of changing the school mascot and colors.
The voices were heard Tuesday night, during the Nemaha Central USD 115 Board of Education meeting, where it was standing room only in the Nemaha Valley High School commons area.
Six speakers, primarily focused on the cost to drop the current Raider mascot when the Baileyville and Nemaha Valley schools combine at the end of the 2013-2014 school year, addressed the Board of Education.
The cost to change the mascot is estimated at nearly $86,000, including a change in athletic uniforms, the painting of gymnasium walls, and other necessary changes. The opponents say the money could be better spent on matters pertaining to actual student education.
Board President Gary Niehues, at the conclusion of the opposing comments, said the school district has been planning the mascot change since discussions began between the former Nemaha Valley and B & B school districts on consolidation.
Currently, new mascot suggestions are being taken from district patrons.
