( KNZA )--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved a policy prioritizing storm water utility projects within the city and providing for a cost share assistance program.
The commission approved the policy this week.
Over the years, residents have asked commissioners to address drainage issues.
Under the policy, the first priority will be given to maintaining and improving drainage in existing city easements. That will be followed by large drainage issues that impact multiple citizens and large longstanding drainage issues.
As funds permit, the city will cost share on an 80/20 basis with property owners for projects that improve individual isolated issues related to storm drainage.
The city will initially fund the program at $20,000 a year. The program will expand and replace the existing curb and gutter cost share program.
In other business, Commissioner Stefan Shamburg, a member of the dispatch advisory committee, reported on discussions with the county on the contract for dispatch services.
The contract, originally signed in 1990, calls for the city to pay the county $38,000 a year for providing dispatch services. Shamburg says the county would like to incrementally raise that amount to $108,000.
It was the consensus of commissioners to honor the contract as it currently stands, paying the county $38,000 for 2013 and again for 2014.
And the commission voted to allow fireworks to be shot off at the Hiawatha City Lake June 29th through July 5th.
