(KAIR) -- Today many new trees will be planted around the nation in celebration of Arbor Day.
The holiday originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska on April 10th, 1872 by J. Sterling Morton.
However, it’s typically celebrated nationally the last Friday in April.
On that day in 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted.
The holiday is typically observed by planting a tree and that’s what many students in Atchison will be doing over the course of the day.

That’s John Bishop, member of the Atchison Tree Board.
Board officials will also plant two seedlings at the community garden in south Atchison.
As a result of these Arbor Day efforts, Atchison has recently been awarded the distinction of “Tree City USA” for the 31st consecutive year by Atchison City Commissioners.
