(KAIR) -- An Atchison County woman has pled not guilty to four counts of animal cruelty.
Lynn Westmoreland entered the plea Friday in Atchison County District Court.
She is accused of not taking proper care of four horses on property she was renting in rural Atchison.
The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office intervened in February after a neighbor found one of the horses dead in their pool. Authorities believe the horse got loose seeking water and fell through the tarp while drinking water that accumulated on the tarp.
Authorities say the other horses were malnourished and without the proper amount of food.
The horses have been since turned over to the care of veterinarians.
A bench trial has been set for May 15th.
