( KNZA )-Plans for a tire recycling business in the southwest part of Nemaha County ( Ks ) were discussed further at this week’s county commission meeting. Heidi Wolfgang reports
Flint Hills Recycling, of Manhattan, Chief Executive Officer Mir Anwar met with the commission to discuss the new business he plans to start in Red Vermillion Township, and the impact the business will have on 24th Road.
The company proposes to turn old tires into rubber pellets and powder that could be used in the manufacture of other products.
A Community Development Block Grant will be sought through the Kansas Department of Commerce to help fund the establishment and start-up of the business.
Lyle Peterson with the Department of Commerce, who was present for the discussion, said the grant money could be used for infrastructure improvements to 24th road if enough money is left over .
Anwar and the county will provide Nancy Gafford with the Rural Development Association of Northeast Kansas with estimated cost numbers so she can move forward with a grant application for the project.
In other business, Paul Kaeb with KSI Conveyors Inc., of rural Sabetha, met with commissioners to let them know that he’s planning another expansion of his rural business and will be requesting a ten-year tax abatement on the expansion.
Following discussion, the commission signed a letter of support for the proposed expansion to the business.
The company manufactures conveyors, bulk seed systems and industrial automation solutions.
