(KTNC) - April is National Fair Housing Month, and the Southeast Nebraska Community Action Partnership is reminding people of their fair housing rights.
Fair Housing Month marks passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The law makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, and advertising in housing. It prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, disability, marital status, or familial status.
In a press release, SENCA says discrimination continues to occur, despite the law, due to a lack of understanding about the law.
Anyone who feels they have been discriminated against can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which is the federal agency designated to enforce the Fair Housing Act. Those in southeast Nebraska who feel they have been discriminated against or who need help regarding a housing discrimination situation can contact SENCA’s Housing Development and Deputy Director, Angela Antholz, at 402-862-2411, extension 113, for assistance.
