(KNZA)--Controlled field burns are commonplace this time of year, with smoke, in recent days, sent skyward as Brown County ag-prodcuers take part in the practice.
However, the burning is sometimes mistaken for a structure fire, or other accidental burn, sending fire crews rushing to the scene only to realize the response was unnecessary.
Because of that, Assistant Hiawatha Fire Chief Brian Butrick says anyone planning to burn should notify local authorities of when and where that's going to happen in Brown County.
He says a simple phone call to the Brown County Sheriff's Office, at 785-742-7125, to inform of where the burn will happen, and what will be burned, can cut down on the unnecessary responses.
