(KAIR) -- The safety of a pair of crosswalks along Atchison’s Commercial Street mall has returned to Atchison City Commissioners attention.
Mark Grove visited Commissioners during the public forum for the third time in as many months expressing concern about motorists not yielding to pedestrians or speeding through the crosswalks by the viaducts on 5th and 6th Street.
They are currently marked with white stripes where pedestrians are allowed to freely cross as special signs indicating that motorists stop under state law for those that cross.
Grove, a handicapped citizen that lives in section eight housing near those intersections, suggested either a speed reduction or clearer defined crosswalk lines.
Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says they monitored the areas after Grove’s last visit and issued several tickets to violators, but says there will always be a problem.

This same principle also applies at any crosswalk with solid bars located around town not guided by a stoplight, largely seen around school districts.
As for the Commercial Street crosswalks, Mayor Allen Reavis had a suggestion.

During Grove’s last visit, City Manager Trey Cocking ordered Public Works to have KDOT conduct an engineering study on the crosswalks.
However, KDOT hasn’t returned a study yet.
After several suggestions were batted around on changing the intersections, Cocking advised Public Works to touch base with KDOT before any ideas of self-engineering come to full circle.
