( KNZA )-The Hiawatha Board of Education met Wednesday afternoon following their annual facilities tour.
The board discussed revisions they would like to see to the current three-year facilities improvement plan for 2013-2015.
Among other things, board members were in agreement they would like to see security upgrades at the district’s three schools—including the installation of cameras and a buzz in system at entrances with cameras.
Discussion was held on the possible future construction of a new vocational/technical building between the high school and middle school, which could include 7-8 classrooms, a new gym and tornado shelter.
Superintendent Penny Hargrove said an analysis conducted by the investment banking firm Piper Jaffrey showed the maximum bond amount that could be financed over 20 years without exceeding the current bond and interest levy is $5.6 million. The bonds that were issued for the construction of the middle school are currently scheduled to be paid off in 2018.
Hargrove said she will have a representative of Piper Jaffrey attend a future board meeting.
And the board approved a school calendar for next school year. The first day of classes for elementary school students along with 5th and 9th graders will be August 14th. The remaining students will begin classes August 15th. The last day of school will be May 22nd.
