(KNZA )-The city of Hiawatha has received more than six-thousand dollars in donations for improvements to a city park.
Troy Boswell, representing the Hiawatha Kiwanis Foundation, presented Mayor Crosby Gernon Tuesday evening with a check for $5,000 for improvements at the Crestview Park near Fourth Street—including new playground equipment, benches and a shelter house.
In addition, a total of 11-hundred dollars was received from Rockey Insurance, Paul and Nancy Rockey, and Leanda May for the construction of a new basketball court with adjustable goals at the park.
Public Works Director David Grimm told city commissioners he plans to raise additional money for the basketball court over the next 60 days and then will come back before the commission for approval to access the remaining funding needed from the Special Park fund.
He said with the 11-dollar donation, about $7,000 is still needed.
Grimm noted the city was not successful in receiving a grant he had sought to help with the project.
