(KAIR) -- Legislation on the national and state level has sprung up and has remained a hot topic throughout the nation after President Barack Obama announced his intentions to ban certain firearms in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.
This has also caused inquiry on how any legislation would trickle down to affect the local level.
Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie recently attended a sheriff’s conference, which featured a discussion from U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom.
One of the focuses of Grissom’s discussion was on the prosecution on the state level of felons in possession of firearms.
Laurie says Kansas currently ranks number one in the nation on prosecution of those cases.

However, he says the government has to be careful on what bans they may pass on general public.

Laurie added that he is in favor of security in schools but believes other facilities like malls or theaters should look into their own necessary private enhancements for added security.
