(KAIR) -- Overcoming life’s obstacles and discrimination were the key messages to Atchison High School students Monday afternoon from 2012 Miss Kansas Sloane Lewis.
Her visit was part of the school’s kick-off on education for Black History Month.
Lewis shared her story of overcoming adversity being the only African-American growing up in Norwich, Kansas.
She also shared the story of her first cousin, Mikey, whose parents both went to prison when he was a child and how he subsequently ran away from foster care and never finished school.
Lewis says after becoming Miss Kansas, she wanted share the story of empowering Mikey to improve his life at the Miss America competition. However, before she participated he committed suicide.
That led to Lewis realizing that empowerment lies within yourself.
Lewis currently attends the University of Kansas, majoring in Political Science and International Studies.
She is on pace to be the first in her family to graduate from college.
