(KTNC) - Nine of 18 teams that competed in the “First Lego League” competition at HTRS High School in Humboldt qualified for the state competition. The event was held last Saturday, with teams coming from throughout southeast Nebraska.
Teams of elementary and middle school age children got a chance to demonstrate how they were able to work together to address a real-world problem. This year’s challenge centered on solutions for senior citizens.
The competition has four parts – the Robot Game, the Project, Robot Design, and Core Values.
Cindy Stalder helped to coordinate Saturday’s event, which saw four of her teams from HTRS Middle School advance to the state competition, including one team that had the highest score in the Project area. (play audio :26)

Other teams advancing to the state competition – in addition to the Sparkly Purple Flamingos and the Southeast 7 – included the Rain-a-corns and Robochefs, both from HTRS Middle School; the Beasty Bots from Nebraska City Middle School; the Awesome Outlets, from the Nemaha County 4-H program; the Crusader Bots, Morley Builders, and the Dragonbots.
The Pawnee City team, the Neon Ninjas, had the high score for robot design. Paul Birkholz, of Morley Builders, was named the outstanding coach, and Cindy Stalder won the award for Outstanding Volunteer.
The competition began with an opening ceremony at 8:00 a.m. Saturday and concluded with an awards presentation Saturday afternoon. Between the competition and the awards presentation, Stalder says the kids got to have some fun. (play audio :19)
The state Lego League competition will be held February 16th at the Air and Space Museum near Ashland. Teams will come from throughout Nebraska for the competition.
Stalder says the Lego Robotics competition continues to grow in popularity, with five state qualifiers this year compared to three a year ago.
