Mound City Council Approves Sale of Properties; Progress on Lodging Tax, Sidewalk Ordinance
01/16/2013

(KTNC) -  Two properties in Mound City that were considered nuisance properties have new owners.  Mound City Aldermen last week approved the sale of properties at 501 State Street and 1012 Mill Street after opening bids for both properties.
The city received two bids for the State Street property.  The council, on a 3-1 vote, accepted the bid of $8,001 submitted by Justin Courtney.
The council accepted the bid of $500 from Jason and Kerri Acton for the Mill Street property, also on a 3-1 vote.  That was the only bid received for that property.
The council unanimously approved a motion to release all special tax bills on the Mill Street property.  Ordinances to authorize the sale of both properties were also approved unanimously.
In other business, Mound City Aldermen accepted MIRMA’s proposal for comprehensive municipal insurance, at an estimated cost of just over $32,500.
City Attorney Brian Tubbs presented sample language to the council for amended building and zoning codes requiring construction of sidewalks in new subdivision and repair of unsafe sidewalks.  The Mound City Council is considering specifications that sidewalks should be five-feet wide, and that sidewalks be required for any building permit for a new home built on an existing lot.
The changes would have to go before the Planning Commission and a public hearing.
And Mayor Chris Krueger told Aldermen this month that State Representative Mike Thompson has introduced legislation that would allow Mound City to implement a five-percent lodging tax.  If the legislature approves the bill, the issue would then be submitted to a vote of Mound City residents.  Mayor Krueger said he’d like funds generated by the tax used to fund a position to promote tourism and economic development in Mound City.
