(KTNC) - This has been an active flu season – nationally and regionally. That includes southeast Nebraska. Southeast District Health Department director Kay Oestmann says the flu has struck the northern part of the district particularly hard – especially Otoe County.
Oestmann says the strain of flu they’re seeing is not the typical gastrointestinal illness, but is a respiratory disease. She explains the symptoms to watch for. (play audio :28)
If you become sick, Oestmann says you should call ahead before visiting your doctor. Care for the flu is mainly supportive in nature. (play audio :44)
Over-the-counter medicines can help relieve symptoms, and Oestmann says it’s not too late to get a flu shot. (play audio :27)
The Southeast District Health Department has flu vaccine available for children age six months to 19 years old. Adults need to consult with a physician to get vaccinated. Oestmann says you can prevent the spread of the disease by covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands frequently, and avoid touching your hands to your face.
Mainly, Oesmann stresses, if you’re sick stay home. (play audio :23)
The Southeast District Health Department gets weekly updates from area schools and hospitals to monitor the progression of the illness.
Oestmann says she wouldn’t be surprised to see an increase in the number of flu cases in southeast Nebraska over the next week, in the wake of the MUDECAS Basketball Tournament.
