Buchanan Co Opts Out of Buyout Program
01/09/2013

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - Buchanan County officials say the county will not participate in a federal buyout program for land damaged during the 2011 flood.

County officials said Tuesday the county can't afford to participate in the FEMA Voluntary Flood Buyout Program, which would provide funds for home and property owners on the north shore of Sugar Lake. The county would need to provide a 25 percent match.

Western District commissioner Ron Hook says the county can't afford the program. And he said the property would be taken off the tax rolls and city would have to maintain it.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports seven property owners expressed interested in the program. They had land with a total appraised value of $346,820, requiring $86,705 from the county.
