(KAIR) -- A 44-year-old Effingham man, out on bond, facing multiple child sex charges, is found dead a day before his scheduled preliminary hearing.
The Atchison County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of an unattended death late Wednesday morning at the James White residence.
Due to conflict of interest in the case, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation took over at the scene and initial reports indicate White died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
White was arrested July 3rd and faced one count of rape, three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.
He was able to post a 250 thousand dollar surety bond on August 29th.
White allegedly committed the acts between January of 2010 and July of 2012 to a girl who was 13 and 14 during that time period.
Since some of the allegations were when the girl was under 14, he could have faced life in prison, if convicted.
County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman says he plans to file a motion to dismiss the charges due to White being deceased.
