( KNZA )-- Expanding transportation services to Atchison and Brown Counties.
That's the goal of Doniphan County Aging Administrator Julie Simmons, who took the matter to Doniphan County Commissioners Monday.
She inquired about applying for grant funds through the Kansas Department of Transportation to offer general public transportation services to the two counties.
An application for grant funds must be made prior to November 30th.
Simmons said the Doniphan County Transportation Department would not have to hire any new employees, nor increase the hours of current employees to provide the additional transportation coverage.
Prior to taking any action, the commission asked Simmons to determine the cost of offering the additional transportation services versus the revenue the county will receive. They also directed her to find out why Atchison and Brown Counties don’t currently offer general public transportation services to their citizens, and to get an actual cost for Doniphan County’s matching grant funds as well as additional monies required to operate the program.
