Commission Asked to Reconsider Wind Turbine Requirements

( KMZA )-A company proposing to build a wind farm in the northeast portion of Nemaha County ( KS ) is asking county commissioners to reconsider the setback requirements established for wind turbines constructed in the county.

Eric Simons and Matt Heck with Juwi Wind LLC met with county commissioners Monday to voice their concerns about the setback requirements.

At the urging of residents in the area of the proposed project, commissioners in September adopted a resolution that requires wind turbines to located three thousand feet from homes and 15-hundred feet from property lines.

Heck and Simons said with an average setback of 1,000 feet from residences, 74 turbines could be constructed in the proposed Nemaha County wind farm project. However, they said with the setback of 3,000 feet from residences that is currently in place in the county, only one turbine could be constructed.

Discussion was held concerning whether the commission would be willing to adjust the current setback requirements to allow the wind farm project to be a viable project.

Commissioners suggested that Juwi Wind talk with the landowners in the project area and convince them that the current setback could be reduced to enable the project to move forward and still be acceptable to the landowners and residents in the project area.
