Breast Cancer Program Saturday at Falls City Library
10/17/2012

(KTNC) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Southeast District Health Department will hold a program to discuss various aspects of the disease Saturday at the Falls City Library and Arts Center.
Health Educator Marilyn Swanson says the meeting will include information on risk factors, symptoms, and screening services for breast cancer.  Some misconceptions about the disease will also be dispelled.  Swanson explains a couple of those.  (play audio  :42)
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, claiming 39,000 lives in 2011.
Among the risk factors, Swanson says breast cancer rates increase with age.  (play audio  :14)
Other risk factors include family history, if you’ve had radiation treatment in the past, and race.  In the United State, white women are at greater risk of developing breast cancer than women of other races.
Swanson highlights the “Every Woman Matters” program, which is offered by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services through the Department of Women’s and Men’s health.  That program offers screening services for women 40-to-74 years of age who meet income guidelines.  (play audio  :27)
Information about the Every Woman Matters program will be available at Saturday’s meeting.  The meeting is scheduled from 10:00 to 11:30 Saturday morning at the Falls City Library and Arts Center.
