Engineering Firm Selected for Hiawatha Trail Project
10/17/2012

( KNZA )-An engineering firm has been selected for the Hiawatha walking and biking trail project.

On the recommendation of the trail committee, the Hiawatha City Commission voted Monday evening to enter into negotiations with BG Consultants of Lawrence for design and construction observation services for the project.

Trail committee member Mike Riley says the committee received proposals from three engineering firms---Schwab-Eaton, TranSystems and BG Consultants.  Using criteria set out by the Kansas Department of Transportation, Riley says the committee ranked the three proposals, with BG Consultants receiving the highest ranking.

The city has been awarded two grants totaling more than $800,000 to help fund the project.

Phase one of the project will connect key elements in the eastern part of the city.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2013.
